the main inspiration for this song was a comment by billy corgan on the smashing pumpkins track 'daphne descends'. it's on the adore record, that is kind of like spacey, acousto-electric. folky songs done thru an electronica lens. he was talking about that song somewhere and referenced it being something you could sit on your front porch and play on an acoustic guitar (or something to that effect). when i came about this riff, that's exactly what it felt like. so my first thought was to take it to that adore, electronica place.
the main influence for the song itself is radiohead's "i might be wrong". i always loved the way that song was produced, how there was this noise that cut out as soon as thom started singing. this build up of the music...until you had something to say.
also, unbeknownst to me at the time, the opening lyric of this demo is straight up a U2 lyric - i was working at barnes and noble at the time and on one of the CD's we played was a cover of 'with or without you'. i accidentally borrowed that lyric (which was later changed once i caught it) for the opening line.
we were able to use much of my demo take here in the final song - we redid vocals and guitars, beefed up the drums, and added some more synth stuff.
the only thing i am remiss we didn't replicate are the "and i disappear" bits at the end.
lyrics
sleight of hand and a twist of fate
you've got a kiss with a bitter taste
i don't want love, you must be confused
i don't want anything to do with you
cause things fall apart
do the dance, run the rat race
bite your tongue before you step out of place
you'll never find what you're looking for
so just settle for what's in store
i don't want to run, you must be confused
cause things fall apart and i disappear

straightforward, no huge production or walls of guitars, but Chris tickles the heartstrings with melody, and that's the true hallmark of a great songwriter. The Insurrectionists
From the first moment I heard Will Toledo's washed-out screams on Boxing Day, I knew he'd "make it". Here we are, 2 years later and he's on Matador records. Sometimes, the world rewards talent. The Insurrectionists
In Adrian Snood’s songs, soulful vocals and slow-moving alt-pop swirl together to create something distinctly moving. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 1, 2023
