probably the most chili peppers song i've ever recorded, complete with slap bass. i kinda wish the song was recorded with a little more care; it would've been a track i'd be really proud of.
that's not to say i don't like the track, but it is fairly lazy in its execution.
it was written about a girl, about a night spent wandering down after a party to whaley lake, where i'd grown up. named after a fish seen on my hawaii seafood poster, one of very few things my dad left behind, named as such because that girl had vacationed in hawaii with her family that summer.
the chorus has always stuck with me and i would try a few more times in the future to give it a place to shine. unfortunately it only ever found its home here.
lyrics
i wanted friends so i tapped my heels together
still, i had none
i wondered when my time begins
has it already come?
meet me by the lake tonight, around 8 or 9
together we go down
and if you change your mind, we could swim ashore
covered in sand, wring our clothes out
we'll see the sunset, our bodies still wet
laying on cool ground
don't know where we'll go next
but that's not important
all that matters is now
and i swear that we could fly
if we'd only try
would you try with me?
we'll walk for miles until our feet bleed
until the sun comes up
the stars will guide the way
though they're so far away
i wonder where we'll end up?
and would you follow me thru this life
i could use somebody on my side
and if you change your mind, we could turn around
i've walked this road alone before
and i swear that we could fly
if we'd only try
would you try with me?
i might kick some rocks as i walk past
familiar haunts
don't know where i'll go then
it won't be heaven
without you, this'll be hell
and i swear that we could fly
if we'd only try
would you try with me?

straightforward, no huge production or walls of guitars, but Chris tickles the heartstrings with melody, and that's the true hallmark of a great songwriter. The Insurrectionists
From the first moment I heard Will Toledo's washed-out screams on Boxing Day, I knew he'd "make it". Here we are, 2 years later and he's on Matador records. Sometimes, the world rewards talent. The Insurrectionists
In Adrian Snood’s songs, soulful vocals and slow-moving alt-pop swirl together to create something distinctly moving. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 1, 2023
