of the songs that landed on IGTYM, this one probably hung the closest to the original demo because we used so much of the original recording in the final.
it was written on guitar and piano and much like its sister songs "things fall apart", "anywhere but here", and "au claire de la lune" it really took shape in pro tools with the addition of synth pads and some production trickery. the sister songs i refer to were those written after the first IGYTM sessions and added to the tracklist in the second go-around.
the first minute or so, all we did was re-record the vocals. for the rest, we rebuilt some of the drum machine parts with some better sounds and added some guitars.
i definitely miss how big the vocals sound in the chorus here vs. in the final track, but we added some cool harmonies in the final that kinda make up for it.
there's also a more intricate bass part i hear here, that was likely just a keyboard bass. i think for the final recording it was a live bass, and for whatever reason, i didn't replicate the part here, though now listening back i wish i did.
lyrics
my oldest friend, what do you see
as you look over at me?
do you see the plans we laid
centuries ago?
at a time when time was nothing,
we had miles left to go
so where did i go wrong?
all that i want is more than i can have
my love, what will this mean
ten years from now?
will you be a light in the dark
or just another ghost?
a castle is a lonely place
to lay your head at night
my dreams, a prison for my heart, now
all that i want is more than i can have
all that you are is more than i am
all that i want is more than i can have
so where did i go wrong?
my oldest friend, what do you see
as you look over at me?
when i look to you, all i see
is a memory

straightforward, no huge production or walls of guitars, but Chris tickles the heartstrings with melody, and that's the true hallmark of a great songwriter. The Insurrectionists
From the first moment I heard Will Toledo's washed-out screams on Boxing Day, I knew he'd "make it". Here we are, 2 years later and he's on Matador records. Sometimes, the world rewards talent. The Insurrectionists
In Adrian Snood’s songs, soulful vocals and slow-moving alt-pop swirl together to create something distinctly moving. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 1, 2023
